.nzwc - south island single malt - 21yo

New Zealand Whisky! Created completely from New Zealand grown barley, distilled in the Willowbank distillery in Dunedin, aged for 21 years in ex-Bourbon barrels. The distillery in Dunedin is no longer operational, but the New Zealand Whisky Collection has found and rescued the stock, for us to enjoy.

40% abv, €95, single malt

Nose: sweet, fruity, sweet berries, citrus, tangerine, kumquats, fresh vanilla, marshmallows, wine-gums, oak, sawdust, fresh mint, sweet and sour pickles
Palate: sweet, vanilla, marshmallows, wine-gums, spicy, cinnamon, creamy mouth-feel,
Finish: firm, sweet, a hint of vanilla, a touch of wood, medium dry, slight metallic
Mark: ++++/+

Conclusion: If the distillery was not closed in 1997, this maturing stock might never have reached the age of 21 years and bottled before it reached this age, and we would not have had the pleasure of this bottling. Personally, I would love to try more of the NZWC whiskies, and obtain a bottle or two, because it is really, really well made whisky.

More info from the website:
"The original release of the South Island Single Malt was in an 18 and 21 year old. The barrels were picked via a multitude of barrel samples sent to Hobart, tasted and matched in CEO Greg Ramsay’s lounge room during the Rugby World Cup by Greg himself, production manager Tom Holder, and, to keep things civilized, good friend and lawyer Brendan. The results spoke for themselves, with the first batch picking up the coveted Double Gold in San Fran."
