.bowmore - wemyss malts - aniseed pastille - 1996-2014

Wemyss malts was very kind to send us some samples to review. Among these samples there was this 1996 Bowmore, bottled in 2014. An 18yo single cask whisky from possibly my least favourite Islay distillery.

46% abv, €115, single malt, non-chill filtered, natural colour

Nose: a whiff of smoke, briny, tobacco leafs, fresh, star anise, liquorice, fresh, citrus fruits, limes, "fat" like salted butter, cookie dough
Palate: sweet, cookie dough, floral, violets, citrus, limes, spicy, red peppers, star anise, liquorice, creamy mouth feel
Finish: firm, rather short, citrus, liquorice, creamy
Mark: +++/++

Conclusion: I am not a big fan of Bowmore, but this is a rather enjoyable dram. Quite spicy and sweet, leaving a thin, creamy coating inside your mouth and a nice liquorice afterthought. Well done Bowmore an Wemyss, but please do something with your pricing. €115 for an 18yo is quite steep, and not something I would be saving up for; there are many more 18yo single cask bottlings out there for a better price.

More info: only 344 bottles were filled from this 18yo hogshead.

a sample was provided by Wemyss for us to review and enjoy
