.port ellen - 27yo - the golden cask

Nothing much known about this whisky, except the distillery, the bottler, the abv, and the age. We have been given this miniature when we visited the Green Welly Stop on a previous trip to Scotland.

51.8% abv, €??
single malt, non-chill filtered, natural colour

Nose: smoke, peat reek, ash, burnt bacon, sweet, honey, creamy, tar, menthol, eucalyptus, spicy, ginger, nutmeg, liquorice root, citrus, oranges, tangerines
Palate: surprisingly subtle, dry, smoke, creamy, sweet, honey, spicy, cloves, allspice, herbal, sage, floral, heather, fruit, stewed apples, stewed pears
Finish: firm, meaty, bacon, smoke, barbecue, sweet, creamy honey
Mark: +++++

Conclusion: I do not get the craze about the Port Ellen whiskies. Most of them taste like licking an ashtray and sneezing in an empty barbecue at the same time, where the ash gets blown in your face. Compared to that, this is rather nice, sweet and spicy. A sad thing that these kind of bottles are rare, and unaffordable.

.many thanks to the Green Welly Whisky stop and other things you can get at the shop for this sample
